Castles, Venetian villas, and sanctuaries

A tour in the most authentic Veneto

In the Corbanese village of Tarzo, two Roman-medieval archaeological sites have unveiled the presence of a first castle built by the noble family Da Corbanese and a second related to the Castelnuovo built by the vassals of the Municipality of Conegliano: Marco and Buto Da Corbanese.

Better known are the Castrum of Serravalle and the Castle of San Martino in Vittorio Veneto, a few kilometres from Tarzo. The first was initially an ancient military settlement and then a residence of the Da Camino family between the eleventh and fourteenth century, the second instead dates back to the Lombard period. Renovated in different periods, it is a group of architectural elements.

Tour of the Venetian Villas of the Alta Marca Trevigiana

Although less known than the Palladian villas of Vicenza and Venice, in Tarzo there are seven Venetian villas and several historical houses. Like Villa Antiga, located in the centre of the village of Corbanese, a building of the late eighteenth century that has the typical features of the Venetian villa, “Villa Del Mansionario”, Lucis – Lucchese, seat of the Municipality... And then Villa Grimani-Mondini now Hotel, Villa Tandura-Mondini, Villa Bettoni-Xompero, Villa Pizzol-Pol, and Villa Lazzarin-Morandin, known as “Il Canevon”.

Churches and sanctuaries in Tarzo and surroundings

We start from the seventeenth-century Sanctuary of San Francesco da Paola: on a cliff of Mount Frascon this place in the eighteenth century was inhabited by hermits and soon became a destination for pilgrimages and strong popular devotions until the nineteenth century.

In Serravalle (Vittorio Veneto) we find the Sanctuary of Santa Augusta, destination of a very frequented walk: the climb begins at the back of the apse of the Cathedral of Serravalle and, after a monumental staircase, continues through a mule-track cobbled in some parts and interspersed with steps until it reaches the sanctuary, where the view ranges from the Serravalle gorge to the lakes of Revine and Tarzo, from Val Lapisina to Col Visentin and, to the south, on the city of Vittorio Veneto and the plain.
